Tour de France Winner Tests Positive for Banned Substance

September 30, 2010

Alberto Contador won the Tour de France in July, but during the race, he tested positive for a banned substance. He’ll be suspended for two years from competition, and Tour officials will meet to determine whether or not to strip Contador of the win.

The suspension is provisional, not automatic, pending completion of an investigation. The amount of clenbuterol found was minuscule, and there is prior precedent which supports Contador’s food contamination defence. I find it very odd the UCI chose to go public with half an investigation today, over two months after the original test and over a month after informing Contador.

I have no great love for Contador, but I can’t help but feel he has been hung out to dry here.
